Senior AC Protection and Control Engineer (Glasgow or Birmingham)

The AC Protection and Control Lead Engineer will be technical responsible for definition, costing and delivery of AC protection and control solutions in tender work as well as in execution projects. Detailed design and manufacturing will be sourced to sub-suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Translate customer specifications and protection schemes into conceptual design, and formulating clear requirements to our sub-suppliers.
  • Evaluate sub-supplier quotes based on the specified requirements and future design.
  • Continuously monitor the design and manufacturing process, as well as leading the design team in the dialogue with our customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  • Review of detailed protection panel design, including interfaces to main components as and intercommunication links. 
  • Ensure compatibility between functional requirements, panel design, relay configuration and settings prior to Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
  • Review suppliers test program and supervise Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
  • Remotely assist installation and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) as needed.

Qualifications / Background

  • The candidate is expected to present a wide experience in protection and control systems for MV/HV AC substations, and shall be able to take on the role as AC Protection and Control Lead
  • Engineer for the AC part of HVDC stations. Typical competency requirements are:   Good understanding of relay protection schemes - including protection, control, measurement, and supervision functionalities. 
  • Knowledge in various brands of protective relays and application of the same.
  • General knowhow in protection and control panel design, including typical business requirements and best practices.  
  • Experience from power systems studies and grid codes, have the ability to evaluate correctness of protection coordination and setting calculations.  
  • Good understanding of configurations and testing requirements for protection systems.
  • Experience from reading technical specifications and managing sub-suppliers.
