Hitachi Energy invests over 80 million euros to expand transformer capacity and operations in Spain
- Set for completion in 2027, the factory in Cordoba will support the increasing need for power transformers and shunt reactors
- The investment is part of the company's $1.5 billion expansion of its global transformers capacity and footprint to accelerate the clean energy transition
Hitachi Energy today announced an investment of over 80 million euros (approx. $87 million) to expand its transformer operations in Spain. The project will generate up to 75 new jobs in the country and is part of the $1.5 billion investment to ramp up global transformers production to meet the rising demand.
The investment will expand the Power Transformers facility in Cordoba to over 32,000 square meters. Combined with process enhancements, the upgraded facility will optimize performance and boost the company's global transformers manufacturing capacity. The mayor of Cordoba city and other regional and local authorities visited Hitachi Energy’s facilities to reiterate their support for employment creation and to attract investment to the region.
Operational since 1930, the facility in Cordoba is one of Hitachi Energy's key manufacturing locations in Europe. It is specialized in the company's TrafoStar global core technology platform and shell transformers, complemented by operations in Galindo, Bilbao. The investment will upgrade the capacity of both product lines and expand its operations to produce shunt reactors.
The transformer investments in Spain is a great example of our commitment to expand our global footprint and capacity at speed and with the scale to meet the long-term needs of our customers and, at the same time, have a positive impact on the local communities, contributing to our social innovation efforts.
Transformers are critical components of the electrical grid. They are essential for stepping up or down voltage levels, contributing to the efficient transmission and distribution of electricity and the overall reliability and stability of the system, and enabling the generation and integration of clean energy sources and the electrification of industries.
Over the years, the factory in Cordoba has delivered transformers to many leading power generation and transmission system operators, utilities, and industries in Europe, North America, and other parts of the world. It has also been a contributor to the successful development of the high-voltage transmission network in Spain, the electrification of the railway infrastructure and integration of renewable energy generation.
