Mitigating load volatility with non-wire solutions - How Baltimore got winter ready
Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) has been the electricity cornerstone of the Baltimore region, ensuring reliable power for its residents since 1816. However, in Fairhaven, a rural area south of Annapolis, winter brought a unique challenge: a spike in electricity demand that exceeded the system’s peak capacity and risked overloading the system when all the customers turned on their electric heaters at the same time. This challenge significantly threatened the reliability of power during the coldest months, impacting the daily lives of over 15,000 residents who depend on consistent electricity for heating. Traditional solutions, like upgrading underground infrastructure, were costly and time-consuming. In this session, learn how a public power utility piloted a new program using a non-wire alternative to store energy during low demand periods and release it during peak demands (e.g. heating), ensuring a stable power supply.
