Hitachi Energy powers Geely Auto EV with its game-changing RoadPak semiconductors
Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader that is advancing a sustainable energy future for all, has won a multi-year order via its partner Jiansan, from VREMT Geely Auto, China’s largest privately owned auto manufacturer and one of the world’s largest makers of electric cars. Hitachi Energy will supply its pioneering RoadPak™ high-performance power semiconductor module for Geely’s ZEEKR, a premium all-electric brand of long-range luxury cars.
Launched in 2022,1 RoadPak continues to set new benchmarks in electric vehicle (EV) performance, banking on Hitachi Energy's more than 100 years of innovation and technology leadership in power electronics. The compact module combines state-of-the-art silicon carbide technology with Hitachi Energy’s power semiconductor expertise achieving the highest levels of current throughput, power density, power conversion efficiency, and switching frequencies.
Higher current throughput means higher torque and better motor performance. Higher power density means faster charging, and high-power conversion efficiency means longer driving range. In independent tests, RoadPak has performed more than four million start-stop cycles giving flawless operational reliability over the vehicle’s lifetime. RoadPak is available in the 750-volt and 1,200-volt ranges, making it ideal for all types of electric vehicles – regular and luxury cars, commercial vehicles, buses, agricultural EVs, heavy-duty trucks, and even high-performance racing cars.
“We are delighted to have won this order for our groundbreaking RoadPak semiconductor technology from one of the world’s leading automakers and EV innovators,” says Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy’s Grid Integration business. “The electrification of transportation is a key element of a sustainable energy future, an ambition that RoadPak advances by enhancing the performance of electric vehicles.”
The global electric vehicle market continues to grow significantly with sales rising yearly based on the Global EV Outlook 2022. Vehicle sales in China increased by around 60 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year.2
Hitachi Energy’s advanced semiconductor technology is a key component in its grid integration, power quality, and e-mobility solutions, enabling vast amounts of renewable energy to flow reliably through power grids and between nations. They are also vital to the traction converter systems that drive high-speed electric trains and metros, including electric vehicles, making mass transportation cleaner on the road to a greener and more sustainable future for all.
