Hitachi Energy and Power China collaborates to boost sustainability and achieve renewable energy goals in Pakistan

Muzaffarabad, Pakistan - December 29, 2020: Patrind hydropower Project on Nelum Jehlum River
Hitachi Energy chosen for its GIS and GIL technology at extra high-voltage levels, including reliable equipment and easy-to-handle designs, for WAPDA, Dasu Dam.

Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) selected Hitachi Energy to harness the country's water and hydropower resources as part of its sustainable vision. Constructed by WAPDA, Dasu Dam is a large hydroelectric gravity dam on the Indus River and a key component of the Water Vision 2025.

The hydropower project will have a total installed capacity of 4320 Megawatts of electricity, which will be completed in two stages. Stage-I has a generation capacity of 2160 MW and will contribute more than 12 billion kWh per annum and stage-II will provide another 9 billion kWh to the local grid every year1. The project will provide clean, reliable energy to Pakistan, help meet local power demand, optimize the energy structure, and likewise serve as a model for other countries looking to tap into their hydropower potential.

"We are excited to work with WAPDA on this groundbreaking project," said Najeeb Ahmad, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy Pakistan. "Harnessing hydropower is a crucial step toward a more sustainable future. We are committed to helping the government of Pakistan to achieve its sustainable energy goals of 60 percent of energy from renewable sources, including hydro by 2030.”

As per the agreement with Power China, the EPC contractor for the construction of the Dasu hydropower project, Hitachi Energy will provide reliable 800kV GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) and GIL (Gas Insulated Line) solutions for the dam. The technologies will enable WAPDA to dispatch clean hydropower from the Dasu Hydro station to the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) network of Pakistan. Hitachi Energy's 800 kV GIS and GIL technology will assist in transmitting affordable, reliable, secure, and clean hydropower through NTDC's first-ever UHV 765KV transmission network.

“This project is a testament to the value of international collaboration and the power of renewable energy to improve lives and communities. We look forward to continuing the work with WAPDA and other partners to bring clean, reliable energy to more people around the world," Ahmad said.

The completion of the Dasu Hydro project is expected by the end of 2026. Hitachi Energy was chosen for its GIS and GIL technology at extra high-voltage levels, including reliable equipment and easy-to-handle designs, as well as the high safety for personnel. The company also offers a one-stop solution for GIS and GIL from the same supply and manufacturing facility.

Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority has emphasized the importance of understanding the end customer's needs including the system requirements needed for the project. The collaboration with Hitachi Energy will bring reliable and sustainable hydropower to the people of Pakistan.
