SACOI3

Hitachi Energy’s power transmission technology will connect the Mediterranean islands with Italy’s mainland

Pioneering HVDC Light® technology will enable power transmission between Italy and France

Hitachi Energy will provide a bipolar multi-terminal high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system to increase the supply and improve the flow of electricity over the connection between Italy’s mainland grid and the islands of Corsica and Sardinia.

Hitachi Energy will provide HVDC Light® solution, based on VSC (voltage source converter) technology connected to a multi-terminal HVDC systems, linking three HVDC converter stations at Codrongianos Sardinia (Italy), Lucciana Corsica (France) and Suvereto Tuscany (Italy).

This HVDC interconnection, named SACOI3 (SArdinia – COrsica – Italy) will replace in full the existing equipment with advanced HVDC technology and increase the power to 400-megawatt (MW) at 200 kV direct voltage. The new connection will make the electricity system more efficient, reliable, and sustainable for the large mediterranean islands and Tuscany.
