Hitachi Energy was selected by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. to deliver the ±800 kV, 6,000 MW Raigarh-Pugalur UHVDC link, which will transmit power from central India to consumers in the south, a distance of 1,830 km.
Hitachi Energy and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) had turnkey responsibility for execution, including system engineering, design, supply, and installation of the two UHVDC converter stations.
This link is Hitachi Energy sixth HVDC project in India and the second UHVDC project.
At full capacity, the Raigarh-Pugalur UHVDC link will be able to supply enough electricity to serve around 80 million people, based on the national average per capita consumption. Ultrahigh voltage minimizes transmission losses, reducing CO2 emissions, and improves grid efficiency.
