Hitachi ABB Power Grids furthers DEWA’s mission to provide world-class services and innovative energy solutions

Secures DEWA framework contract for the supply of a substation control and monitoring system for 33 substations, encompassed in an advanced cybersecurity solution

As a world-class utility pioneering the adoption of innovative and sustainable solutions, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has set the benchmark for performance and quality of services provided to the citizens of Dubai. Through the implementation of the latest technologies and practices in improving energy efficiency, DEWA plays a critical role in the sustainable social, environmental and economic development of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.

Continuing its mission to deliver global leading services and innovative energy solutions, DEWA has announced the award of a five-year framework contract to Hitachi ABB Power Grids for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 15 new substations and the refurbishment and upgrade of 18 existing substations across Dubai.

Over the years, DEWA has invested strategically to establish the necessary infrastructure to support the roll out of smart applications and citizen-friendly digital platforms. Critical to these initiatives is the periodic expansion and upgrade of Dubai’s power network to ensure the highest level of reliability and safety. Through the recent framework agreement, Hitachi ABB will supply DEWA with the latest substation automation, control and protection monitoring systems (SCMS), encompassed in an advanced cybersecurity solution.

“Hitachi ABB Power Grids has worked extensively to introduce the latest in power transmission and distribution technologies to the region, reinforcing DEWA’s position as a global leader among utilities”, said Dr. Mostafa AlGuezeri, managing director, Hitachi ABB Power Grids, U.A.E and Gulf Countries. “The latest agreement is a testament to our successful collaboration as part of previously executed contracts and underscores Hitachi ABB Power Grids’ position as a partner of choice in support of DEWA’s mission to ensure the well-being of its stakeholders”.

As part of the contract, Hitachi ABB Power Grids will supply MicroSCADA, the most advanced power automation solution in the market as well as the industry leading Relion® family of intelligent electronic devices (IED) for the protection, control, measurement and supervision of power systems. The complex cybersecurity solution was developed by specialists within Hitachi ABB Power Grids specifically addressing regional security requirements and specifications as well as rapidly developing international standards for operational technology (OT) cybersecurity.

Hitachi ABB Power Grids’ SCMS technology is designed to increase grid reliability and safety by using a powerful set of tools to monitor and manage the power. The advancement of the SCMS and security solutions and the related complex system integration capabilities positions Hitachi ABB Power Grids as a technology and market leader driving the adoption of next-generation power systems and a smarter and stronger grid, across the world and in the Middle East.
