With electricity grids moving to a low-carbon energy future, grid forming energy storage will be a critical enabling technology to achieve this transition technically and economically. Currently, power systems in Australia and the Asia Pacific region are experiencing less system inertia and decreasing fault levels due to renewables displacing conventional generation. There is a need for these services to be replaced or replicated in order to allow synchronous machines to switch off and renewable generation to connect and operate. There are also challenges to connect renewable generators on “weak” sections of the network due to low fault levels and associated instabilities.

Today, with advanced power electronics, grid forming energy storage systems can provide inertia and system strength by way in which they operate, which is different to the typical grid following solar and battery energy storage inverters connected to date. Furthermore, these systems can unlock revenue streams to support the economic viability of a project in addition to addressing the technical challenges.

Hitachi Energy is leading the way in pioneering new solutions that keep the power system stable while also allowing developers to extract revenue from this approach. Hitachi Energy's recent ESCRI Dalrymple BESS project in Australia with ElectraNet, South Australia’s transmission network service provider, is the first and only large-scale grid forming energy storage system in Australia’s grid, and largest such system in the world. It has demonstrated these new services as well as a strong financial return through regulated network services and unregulated energy market services.
