ABB technology to power 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia

ABB solutions to support PLN in delivering reliable power to sports facilities in Palembang, co-hosting the games with Jakarta

ABB will support Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s main electricity utility, to ensure reliable power supply for the 2018 Asian Games, the most prestigious multi-sport event in the region. To be held from August 18 to September 2, 2018, the games will be co-hosted in Jakarta, the country’s capital, and Palembang, the capital of the South Sumatra province.

ABB engineered packages and products for substations feeding the area will help strengthen electricity supply to the city of Palembang, with a population of over a million, the second largest on Sumatra Island. The area served by the substations includes the airport and many of the event’s most high-profile venues, including the Jakabaring Sriwijaya stadium and Jakabaring Sports City.

Key ABB product supplies include gas-and air-insulated switchgear, protection equipment and telecommunication systems. ABB’s substation automation, including its ABB AbilityTM MicroSCADA, will help control and monitor the substations including its protection system, and ensure full integration between system devices. ABB’s mission-critical communication networks will provide the main communication bridge between substations in the Palembang region. ABB will also provide stand-by service specialists to support PLN during the period of the games.

“We are pleased to support PLN in providing reliable power supply for the 18th Asian Games”, said Claudio Facchin, President of ABB’s Power Grids division. “ABB has been partnering with Indonesia for decades in the development of its power infrastructure and remains committed to delivering leading-edge technologies to support the country’s economic growth.”

ABB also recently supplied gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to PLN for critical substations in the greater Jakarta area, Western Java, East Java and Sulawesi and has an extensive and growing footprint in Indonesia.
