Hitachi Energy’s transformers for Metro Chennai: Fostering efficiency amidst the city’s hustle

Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) plays a strategic role in the city’s infrastructure and urban life. Since its launch, it has become an essential service, significantly impacting various aspects of life in Chennai, from mobility to environmental sustainability and economic growth.

Challenges

Expanding infrastructures for rapid urban growth

Chennai, being one of India's largest metropolitan cities, has witnessed rapid urbanization over the years. This growth has put tremendous pressure on its road network, leading to frequent traffic jams and longer commute times. The Chennai Metro has emerged as a vital solution to the city's mobility challenges, offering fast, efficient, and reliable transportation. With well-planned routes and punctual services, it reduces reliance on private vehicles and overloaded buses, easing daily commutes. Its integration with buses and suburban trains allows for seamless travel across the city, cutting congestion and improving urban life.

Beyond convenience, the metro significantly reduces air and noise pollution by decreasing the number of vehicles on the road. Running on cleaner electricity, the metro plays a pivotal role in sustainable urban development while making Chennai healthier and more environmentally friendly. It delivers an affordable, essential service that elevates the daily commuting experience.

Solution

Hitachi Energy's transformers safeguarding safety and efficiency of metro transportation

Chennai Metro has been developed in two phases. Phase I covered a 45.046 km network with two corridors, connecting key areas with 32 stops through elevated and underground stations. Phase II, currently under construction and expected to be completed by 2026, includes three more corridors: Corridor-3 from Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.4 km), Corridor-4 from Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 km), and Corridor-5 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (44.6 km).

Hitachi Energy has successfully supplied various transformers for Phase II, contributing to the needed metro expansion. The supply of various types of transformers (traction transformers, power transformers, dry type transformers) is a further demonstration of Hitachi Energy's technological leadership, which has a diversified portfolio to serve the railway segment and the experience to meet a wide range of customer needs.

Among the various solutions used in this project, the choice of transformers with the recently launched TVP technology is of particular importance. Indeed, Transformers with Transient Voltage Protection (TVP®) Technology provides complete protection for electrical systems at every switching instance. Their network-agnostic design makes them the best fit for railway applications, which have a heightened risk of premature failure and unplanned outages.

Benefits
