Hitachi Energy advances toward carbon neutrality in its transformer operations in Figeholm, Sweden
- The company invests in a new renewable energy plant, to be inaugurated by the summer 2026
- The goal is to become carbon neutral in its own operations by the year 2030
Hitachi Energy is investing in a new renewable energy generation plant, adjacent to its factory, which is another step toward becoming carbon neutral in its own operations.
The new renewable energy facility provides a sustainable and long-term solution for the Figeholm factory – producing cellulose-based insulation materials for power transformers – in line with the Hitachi Energy Sustainability 2030 Strategy to be carbon-neutral in its own operations by the year 2030. Wood pellets obtained from sustainable sources following globally recognized standards on sustainable biofuels, will be used as an energy source. The process includes a heating installation with a steam boiler, which supplies energy to the presses that will now utilize wood pellets. The transition from heavy oil to pellets will contribute to significantly reducing the factory’s direct Scope 1 GHG1 carbon emissions and thus lower the carbon footprint of the insulation material produced. .

The factory in Figeholm has a long history of paper board manufacturing that stretches back almost a hundred years. The paper is manufactured for insulation purposes, with high purity and mechanical and dielectric strength prepared for the high and demanding performance in power transformers. As critical components of the power system, transformers transform voltage levels to enable efficient power generation, transmission and distribution. Hitachi Energy has a strong heritage as a world-leader transformers manufacturer in Sweden, Europe and the rest of the world, having the largest transformers installed base globally.
Figeholm is a great example of how we are strongly committed to lead the energy transition urgency through our own operations across the world. The company is continuously investing in major expansions, driven by the accelerating transition to renewable energy, and we at the Transformers Business Unit are heading up the way to meet our customers demand with the highest sustainability standards.
Today, around 120 people work at the factory in Figeholm, all of whom will participate in training on the new solution. The energy plant is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.
Hitachi Energy currently has approximately 6,500 employees in Sweden. The company counts with several manufacturing facilities across the country, with the largest operations in Ludvika and Västerås.
