A historic milestone: Foundation stone laid for the new Hitachi Energy Park in Finland

Today, the foundation stone for the new Hitachi Energy Park was laid in Vikby, Mustasaari, Finland. This marks a historic milestone for the company’s $180 million investment in the country, which was announced previously.

The new production and technology center, spanning over 40,000 sq m., will be built in the Vaasa region to enhance the company's production capacity to meet the surging demand for power technology solutions. This initiative supports the transition toward a carbon-neutral energy future and enhances Finland's energy security while facilitating the export of clean energy technology.

The new Hitachi Energy Park will feature a top-notch transformer factory and modern office and testing facilities, which will double the company’s production and testing capacity of transformers in Finland. As a result, Hitachi Energy will recruit approximately 200 new employees in the Vaasa region.

The foundation stone for the new facility was laid by Joakim Strand, Finland’s Minister of European Affairs and Ownership Steering, Rurik Ahlberg, Mayor of Mustasaari, and Peter Forssell, EVP of YIT's Building Construction segment, in the presence of Matti Vaattovaara, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy in Finland, Bruno Melles, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy’s Business Unit Transformers and Norbert Beatrix, HUB Europe Manager, Business Unit Transformers.

“The foundation stone ceremony is a major milestone as part of a historic investment in Finland. This project, significant for both the Vaasa region and Finland as a whole, showcases strong energy expertise and innovation and demonstrates the unique technology pioneering spirit of the entire region. The clean energy transition is urgent, and with this investment, we are stronger than ever to support our customers and societies in advancing a sustainable energy future for all – both in Finland and globally,” said Matti Vaattovaara.

Bruno Melles, Managing Director of Business Unit Transformers, added, “This is an exciting era for the energy sector, driven by unprecedented growth from electrification and decarbonization. By leveraging our transformer footprint and strategic supplier base in Europe, we are maximizing our manufacturing capacity to meet the market demand to support our customers.

The Hitachi Energy Park Production and Technology Center is expected to be operational by early 2027. Groundwork on the construction site is ongoing and will continue until autumn 2025. Today marked the milestone of starting the foundation works.

Hitachi Energy is at the forefront of developing and manufacturing key technologies for the clean energy transition. The company's technologies and critical grid components—such as transformers—enable flexible, reliable, and safe electricity transmission and distribution. They also facilitate smooth and efficient electric rail traffic, stable electricity supply for industries and applications such as data centers, and enable the integration of renewables.

In Finland alone, over half of the wind energy produced flows through the transformers and substations supplied by the company.  The company has over 110 years of experience in industrial transformer production in Finland. The Vaasa factory has become the country’s largest and most important transformer manufacturing plant, contributing significantly to national energy security.
